When a group of parents and Vassar College educators joined forces in 1934 to found Poughkeepsie Day School, they envisioned a place where students are valued as individuals, learning is active and hands-on and the curriculum reflects the best thinking and research in education.
Since then, PDS has grown to become the premier pre-kindergarten through grade 12 independent day school of the mid-Hudson Valley. A magnet for those living in towns within a 40-mile radius, we draw a diverse mix of local and former New York City and international families who seek not only a sense of community but also the benefits of enrolling multi-age students on a single campus.
Our students are flexible, independent thinkers with a highly developed sense of their own abilities. Our rigorous college preparatory curriculum prepares our students for the challenges of selective colleges and universities. Small, seminar-style classes encourage participation and ensure that students receive personalized attention. Collaborative projects foster an ability to work well with others. Teachers compile formal, written evaluations, charting academic and personal growth and development, for each student several times each year.
