Food Service
Food.jpg

It’s no secret that maintaining a nutritious diet is essential to young minds. Not only does eating right lead to improved performance in the classroom - it paves the way to a longer, healthier and, ultimately, better quality adulthood. Food is also at the center of community. How we handle its preparation and who we share the experience and joy of dining with is critical to how we connect with others. Good eating habits begins at home and are encouraged at PDS to help our children make good choices for themselves as they grow up and go out into the world.

With this in mind, PDS made a strategic decision to establish a food program providing nutritionally balanced meals of hot entrees (with a vegetarian option offered daily) or cold deli sandwiches with green salad and fruit salad included. We have also expanded our offerings of specialty salads to be offered in the "Grab and Go" case.

Food Service FAQs
Which meals will be served, and when?

Students and their families can enjoy a continental breakfast with special hot items daily all morning until 10:30 am.

Lower school morning snack is now provided by PDS. Children will enjoy such treats as grapes, yogurt and orange slices.

Sit-down lunch will be served Monday through Thursday. As is tradition at PDS, Friday will be pizza day!

Grab-and-go a la carte items such as special salads, sandwiches, snacks and whole fruit will be available for on-the-go students who are unable to find the time to eat in the dining room.

PDS food service will also be providing healthy snacks for the after-school program.

How much will meals cost?
Sit-down lunch is priced at an amazing $4.00 per day. Take-away or a la carte breakfast and lunch pricing will vary.

How do we pay for meals?
For your convenience, payment is handled through a pay-down account. Parents are directed to a special website that allows them to front load a meal card using a check or credit card. Each time your child has sit-down lunch, their account will debited $4.00. Each time you or your child purchases a take-away or a la carte item, the account will be debited for that amount. Read Setting Up and Maintaining Your PDS Food Service Account for more details.

Where will our food come from?
PDS has a farm share at a local CSA that will be renewed in the spring and fall seasons of 2012. Our food will also come from a natural and organic wholesaler, local distributors and community-based businesses, with some items grown and cultivated right here at PDS.

What if my child has allergies or special food requirements?
There will always be meal options for children that are allergy sensitive, vegetarian or vegan. Please email us at food@poughkeepsieday.org if you have any special concerns that you would like to discuss.
