In common with many independent schools PDS has an Employee Gift Policy in the Family Handbook.
We know parents want to thank teachers and recognize the difference they make, especially at holiday season. There are many ways to express appreciation but we ask that families not give gifts directly to teachers and that they do not solicit money from others for group gifts. Expensive gifts and cash are never appropriate. The best way to let an individual teacher know how much they are appreciated is to write them a letter, or write a letter to the school. Inexpensive, homemade personal gifts and cards are fine and often have more meaning.
A gift to the Annual Fund in the name of teacher is also a great way to show appreciation. Gifts to the Annual Fund make sure that teachers continue to be supported through professional development opportunities such as conferences and workshops. This directly supports the work they do in the classroom.
Why do we have this policy.
Teachers are professionals and should be seen and compensated as such.
Sometimes gifts seem like tips rather that recognition. And sometimes individual staff and faculty members are offended by them.
Personal gifts can raise conflict of interest issues and concerns
Individual teachers are supported by a network of visible and less invisible colleagues all of whom deserve recognition as a matter of fairness.
They are also supported by professional development and that is why we encourage families to consider a gift to the Annual Fund in the name of an individual teacher they want to particularly thank. Great teachers are learners too. Gifts to the Annual Fund ensure that all teachers have opportunities to continue to learn and grow as experts in their field.
Please contact me with any questions about this policy. I know you want to show your appreciation for the great teachers at PDS and let them know how important they are in the lives of your children.
