Poughkeepsie Day School
celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. We are developing this
page in order to honor our rich history and, particularly, the people
who helped to make the school what it is today.
This anniversary year
kicked off with a celebration on Saturday, October 16. The
event included an alumni/ae picnic in the afternoon. In the
evening, current and past parents, alumni/ae, faculty and staff
and friends were invited to a welcome reception. Following
the reception, a special ceremony honored long-time community
trustee Theodora (Teddy) Hoe, alumni/ae parents Bill and
Mary Lunt, PDS grandparent and legendary folksinger/enivronventalist
Pete Seeger, veteran upper school history teacher Liz
Vinogradov and community activist Rebecca Yenawine '90.
Lorraine Roberts, community trustee, educator and community
activist, delivered the Elizabeth C. Gilkeson Lecture: Genie
Bottle: Wishes for PDS.

| Former
PDS director Dick Hanson is shown with the school's founding
director, Elizabeth C. Gilkeson, cutting the cake at the school's
50th anniversary in 1984. Mrs. Gilkeson is also pictured in
a photo from the early days of the school on the top left of
this page. She died in 1999, the year in which the Day School's
"new" building on Boardman Road was officially named
for her. |
| The first
all-school activity of the year brought students in pre-k -
12 together to make 70th birthday banners for PDS. |
