NAIS global initiative on poverty--Challenge 20/20--begins in our own backyard

Students in this fall's Challenge 20/20 central study are not only learning about the problem of global poverty; they are trying to do something about it, starting right here in the local community. To date, two efforts have been launched as an outgrowth of student work. In cooperation with Dutchess Outreach, a sub-committee led by eigth-grader Will Meyer, is collecting nonperishable goods (lobbies of Gilkeson Center and Kenyon House through November 22) for the benefit of members of the Poughkeepsie-area community. And Elizabeth Moulic, in ninth-grade, has organized a "Skip a Meal for Oxfam" day (see letter below). Please support these student initiatives.

Dear members of the PDS community,

My name is Elizabeth Moulic and I am part of the Challenge 20/20 C.S. Challenge 20/20 is a group of middle and upper school students trying to create community awareness and solutions to end world poverty.

I am organizing "Skip a Meal for Oxfam" day. Oxfam is an organization that funds the efforts to reduce and end poverty. On November 17, people all over the world will skip a meal to recognize the more than 850 million people living in hunger. On that day, the Balancing Act (PDS food service) will offer a bowl of rice for $1 along with their normal meal servings (a bowl of rice is the meal that many people living in poverty eat on a daily basis). Middle and upper school students can skip lunch that day and donate the money they would spend for lunch to Oxfam or buy a bowl of rice from the Balancing Act and donate the remaining money to Oxfam, or not participate. It is optional. For more information about "Skip a Meal for Oxfam", visit the organization's Web site

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Moulic
PDS 9th grade student
