The academic program in the lower school is a rich and diverse
one. Classroom teachers are typically responsible for the following
subject areas: language arts (reading, writing, spelling, handwriting,
etc.), mathematics, social studies and science. Because of Poughkeepsie
Day School’s interdisciplinary approach, these areas are often connected
by themes (e.g., the city, Native Americans, famous inventors and
their inventions, ancient Egypt, etc.) so that students see the
relationships among disciplines, cultures and/or eras. In addition
to their classroom teachers, students in the lower school meet weekly
with specialists both in and outside the classroom for art, drama,
library, music, physical education and Spanish. Literacy and math
specialists also work with teachers and students as appropriate.
Networked computers are located in every classroom, allowing students
supervised access to the Internet as well as to word-processing
programs and educational software; each classroom also has its own
intranet e-mail account.
